My love/hate relationship with Halloween

What I love about Halloween:

  • It’s fun to dress up in costumes. It’s even more fun to dream up said costume and put it together as creatively as possible. And little kids in costumes are just down right adorable (most of the time).
  • I love the weather, usually. Fall is my favorite time of year and Halloween is perfect when its cool enough for long sleeves but you don’t need a jacket.
  • I like dipping into my candy supply before trick or treat. It’s the only time of the year that I ever by candy in bulk.
  • Giving out food. My favorite thing about handing out candy at our church’s trunk or treat is that we are also serving hot dogs and chips. I know that there are more than a few families who need that meal to make their week a little easier.
What I Hate about Halloween:
  • Handing out candy at a trunk or treat or even your home usually feels more like a stick up then a fun night to meet the neighborhood kids.
  • Ungrateful Mumbling Zombie Kids. Trick or Treating is probably the closest we will ever get to experiencing a night of the living dead… kids can be heard on the the streets muttering ‘candy, must get more, candy’ .
  • Scary Stuff. Personally, I hate being scared. One time in college, my roommate hid in my closet and jumped out at me when I had returned to the room. My response was that I sat down and cried. Sounds like fun, huh?
  • Not a good candy return. While your handing out twix and snickers, your kids are out getting dum-dums, good and plenty, and every other disgusting kind of candy known to man. This is why you should raid your candy supply before trick or treat.
  • Stays with you. I start November out 5lbs heavier from eating the candy that I bought to hand out. Why not get started early, Thanksgiving is only in a few weeks anyway! And don’t even get me started on how much candy costs. Phew!
  • Women’s Costumes. Costumes for women are either sexy _______ (nurse, kitten, cafeteria lady… jk) or one of those inflatable costumes that make you look super huge while also making it impossible to get out the door to hand out candy. Hmm, looks like I’ll be sporting that festive hat I bought from Cracker Barrel again.
When it comes down to it, I really don’t like Halloween. If our church didn’t have a trunk or treat, I probably would just take our kids out somewhere for the night and do something fun as a family. Although, some day I would like to brainstorm an idea to redeem the holiday. Maybe I could use it as a good opportunity to meet my neighbors and bring them a treat to their door.
What do you love and hate about Halloween? Any ideas of how you could make it better?
